Solar Energy

Solar Panels and Solar Energy

Solar Panel constructionSolar Panels, also commonly called "collectors", can be fitted to the roof of your home. By using the heat of the sun it is used to heat water, or another fluid, which passes through the panel. The fluid is then fed to a heat storage area like your hot water cylinder to help provide hot water for domestic use or act as a source of hot water for central heating for your home.

Solar energy can also be used for space heating in conjunction with low temperature applications such as under floor heating systems. If correctly sized, the solar system can produce up to 40% of the annual heating load as well as producing 60% - 70% of the hot water load.

No Sun? No Worries!
Solar panels work throughout daylight hours, even if the sky is overcast and there is no direct sunshine. Solar panels can also be used to contribute to space heating demand.

Frequently Asked Questions about Solar Energy

Bathtime! Is my house suitable to a solar water heating system?
Yes it is. Existing houses will benefit with the addition of a solar panel heating system to add to their hot water requriements. The panels themselves are laid on the south-most facing roof of your home to blend in with the existing roof system and the pipes put through your attic to merge with your existing hot water system - easy!

Is it a clean source of energy?
It is. A solar panel water heating system provides clean and free hot water during the summer months and also reduces the heating demand during winter. It is also the easiest way to comply with the renewable energy requirements of new building regulations.

Will my solar panels require maintenance?
Once the system is installed the natural force of rain will keep it clean. In the unlikely event of a tube inside the panel breaking, they are easily replaced. You can check the pressure anytime after installation yourself to ensure there are no leaks in the system.

Is there enough sun in Ireland to benefit from this system?
Yes, actually. A correctly installed solar panel system by Keyes Insulations can provide a minimum of 60% of your domestic hot water requirements. This figure will be higher in summer.
