Understanding U-values
U-value is the term given to the energy efficiancy rating for attic insulation, windows, walls and other building components. The different components that make up e.g. a wall such as the brick outer leaf, block inner leaf and the plaster would each have an R-value. The R-valueis the resistance value to heat loss of that component. The U-value is the sum of the R-values divided into one. The lower the U-value, the better the resistance to heat loss.

The Problem
Condensation and mould growth on internal walls is a major concern for many Irish homes. This is due to many homes not having adequate, if any, cavity wall insulation especially against the inner leaf. This means the inner wall is always cold. When the warm air inside the room makes contact with the cold wall, moisture forms, allowing the growth of black mould and mildew.
The Solution
If the problem which causes condensation is a cold wall, then the solution is to keep it warmer. Filling the cavity inside your wall increases thermal resistance of the external wall. You will then notice a significant reduction in condensation build-up.
Save Money
Many houses in Ireland have either little or no attic insulation. As heat rises, this is where most of it will escape from. Around 25% of heat loss is experienced through the attic space. Proper attic insulation will dramatically reduce this loss and save you money after as little as 2 years.
